American bakeries range from wholesale operations that supply restaurants to neighborhood shops that sell bread, pastries, cookies and cakes over the counter, and many of them also pour coffee. Bagel shops boil and bake on site and sell out of favorite flavors by late morning; donut shops open before dawn and are often family-run; patisseries and cake studios take custom orders for weddings and birthdays and usually need one to two weeks' notice. Ice cream parlors, gelato shops and frozen yogurt bars are seasonal in the northern states and year-round in the South and on the West Coast. Prices are posted per item, by the dozen or by the pound, and most shops now take cards and mobile payment.

I tried Acme Bread Company for the first time today, and it was an incredible experience. Iβve delivered fabric orders to them before, and every time I walked in, the smell of the fresh bread was unbelievable. It always reminded me of real European-style bakeries β something I truly miss in the USA: hot bread, fresh out of the oven, made with care and tradition. Today, someone finally told me where I could actually buy their bread, and I honestly canβt thank them enough. I spent a little over $100, and from the first bites I was instantly reminded of Romania, where bread culture is huge and artisan rustic bread is part of everyday life. Everything I tasted was amazing. The rustic artisan style they make here is absolutely authentic, and they really nailed it. They honestly deserve a bigger location because people clearly love coming there. The current spot is so small that only about two people can fit inside at once β but somehow that also made the experience feel even more authentic, cozy, and special. What an unexpected highlight right before Memorial Day weekend. Thank you guys β you already made my holiday special. A tall gentleman served me with patience and professiona

The wait wasnβt that bad. The bread and pastry selections were perfect. The apple turnovers delicious and French bread great with butter or to have with dinner.

Acme Bread is a quintessential Berkeley staple--a well-established history, everything thoughtfully made from scratch, a local favorite. At this beloved outpost, you feel like you're ordering straight from the kitchen. All the breads and pastries are on display with handwritten signs. I suggest walking up to the window ahead of time to get an idea of what you want to get, since their website isn't comprehensive. It focuses on breads (loaves and rolls), but they have a few turnovers, madeleines, and other seasonal rotating selections. I loved the fruit jam biscuits, which had a delicious earthy taste from the the spelt and wasn't too buttery. They also have these giant quarters of focaccia-based "pizza", vegetarian, creative toppings, very fresh as you would expect. Prices are fair; quality is good, but if you buy a lot of stuff it becomes a splurge. The line can get long but it moves steadily. Parking is manageable with the private lot and additional section in the back.

Amazing bread and pastries with fast and very friendly service. Such a popular place. I got there around 9:30 and there was already a long line waiting outside. However the staff was so helpful and fast that the line was moved very quickly. I was in town for work and got sourdough levain (obs everyoneβs fav according to a staff), an apple turnover, one of each blue berry and raspberry jam tart, and walnut bread, a slice of mushroom pizza and a blueberry biscuit. Oh my gosh. Everything just tasted so good. Fresh and delicious. My best pizza ever. The olives, mushroom, and onions just mix so well together with the pesto. Walnut cinnamon loaf was so loaded with the beautifully glazed walnuts. Sourdough cheese roll was so delicious. Everything jam was so naturally sweet and freshly made. Turnover was so crispy and with an amazing blend with apple slices and cinnamon. Everything simply was so yummy and fresh. Good price for the quality offered. With the organic flour. Def a 6/5!!

I bought ACME bread from the grocery before and liked it. And I just found out this place, what a shame that I didnβt know it existed, even though I live close by! Thumbs up, best bread variety, my kid loves it, canβt stop eating! I like the olive bread, the mushroom pizza and the cheddar twist. So glad we have it in the east bay, such a gem.
